Tom Leahy scored a brilliant winner against his old club as Maidstone took the derby honours at Tonbridge to stay top of National League South.

Leahy, back at Longmead for the first time since his summer move to the Stones, scored a cracker from outside the box with 10 minutes remaining.

The forward, who missed Maidstone’s 1-0 win over Weston Saturday through illness, also hit the bar as Tonbridge paid for not making the most of their first-half opportunities.

Victory maintained the Stones’ 100 per cent record on the road, now standing at four wins out of four.

Tonbridge were unchanged from their 4-0 win at Farnborough, while Maidstone welcomed back Leahy for Jayden Davis in the only change from their Weston victory.

A top-three clash between local rivals, with players on either side facing their old clubs, made the derby every bit as competitive as expected, without ever threatening to get out of hand.

It was a case of the sides keeping their concentration to nullify the opposition’s strengths, although Tonbridge undoubtedly had the best of the first half.

As the home side, they were taking the game to the Stones, carving out several openings.

Lamar Reynolds, one of five ex-Stones players in the home XI, fired over after a jinking run into the box in the opening minute.

Midway through the half, Ricky Korboa forced a decent low save from Lenny Holden at his near post after collecting a pass from Reynolds, then Bailey Akehurst flashed a first-time effort inches wide from 25 yards when teed up by Sam Corne.

Towards the end of the half, Frankie Baker had an effort ruled out for offside, Holden made an excellent save in a one-on-one with Reynolds and Korboa bent a shot narrowly past the far post.
