Tom Lawrence Rangers return thrills Michael Beale as boss reveals biggest 'surprise' package of pre season

Michael Beale reckons Rangers frontline is in decent shape as he revealed one player that has hit him with surprise this pre-season.

The Light Blues ran out comfortable 2-1 winners against Bundesliga 2 side Hamburg in a highly-anticipated friendly in Glasgow, with new stars such Cryiel Dessers, Abdallah Sima and Kieran Dowell all in action, while the long-awaited return of Tom Lawrence was met with a warm response from the Ibrox crowd. But it was two familiar faces in Fashion Sakala and James Tavernier that got the crucial goals to seal the first win of pre-season for the London boss.

And while Beale continues his pursuit of Feyenoord forward Danilo, the Englishman reckons he already has some quality to lead his Rangers line. Yet the biggest 'surprise' to him in pre-season has been the emergence of 20-year-old defender Johnly Yfeko, who took the plaudits for his steady showing off the bench against Newcastle United in midweek. The youngster handled himself against Tim Walter's side and Beale hasn't let that go unnoticed.

He told Rangers TV: "I'm really happy with the game. We used a lot of players again, second half you can see Tom coming on, it was great to see him back, but he's still to pick up on fitness. I'm excited by the amount of forwards we have, we got a goal from our pressing. It was another step in the right direction.

"We mixed the minutes up, I thought Bailey Rice came on again and showed he's a talent we need to nurture. Big Johnly again, he's becoming the big surprise of pre-season, making everybody smile.
