Todd Cantwell has only 2 Rangers paths left to take and I know Philippe Clement won't forgive rubber ear – Barry Ferguson
Todd Cantwell isn’t the first Rangers player to suffer the indignity of getting an early hook and he won’t be the last. But he’s certainly the only man who can decide how the difficult experience he went through on Thursday night ends up resolving itself.
Of course it was a tough evening for the lad as he was dragged off before half-time during the drab draw with Aris Limassol. But now he’s got a big decision to make. He can either carry on as he is or he can knuckle down, do as his boss Philippe Clement tells him and get his Rangers career back on track.
I really hope he takes the second option because as I’ve said plenty times before, I’m a big fan of the former Norwich playmaker and I really believe he’s got a lot to offer this Ibrox team. Of course we all know he’s better suited to playing through the middle but when your manager gives you a job to do, you simply have to do it.
What Cantwell’s not going to get away with is giving his manager the rubber ear, especially while putting in the kind of sub-standard display he registered against Aris. Clement had to tell him once too often about drifting in off the right flank when he’d been ordered to keep his width and when he failed to carry out his manager’s instruction, it gave the Belgian no choice but to act.
Fair play to big Phil, replacing one of your star men midway through the first half was a huge call. But it sent out a message that he’s the boss and now it’s up to Todd to respond.
Thankfully, I never had to go through what the 25-year-old endured the other night. But I was there when Fernando Ricksen was given similar treatment by wee Dick Advocaat at Celtic Park back in 2000.
Fernando lasted only 22 minutes as his Old Firm debut turned into a nightmare on
