Tim Howard's comments show how Manchester United have changed ahead of Everton clash

On Sunday Manchester United will face Everton in the Premier League and the clubs have a long-standing relationship that has seen many players play for both sides such as Wayne Rooney, Michael Keane and Tom Cleverley in recent years.

One player who falls into this category is former United States men's national team goalkeeper Tim Howard. He made over 490 appearances across spells at both sides, though he is mainly remembered for his time at Everton where he played 10 seasons for the Merseyside club.

After United's poor start to the season, where they lost against Brighton and Brentford, Howard spoke on NBC about Erik ten Hag's struggles to get the team playing his way. He said: "The manager has had enough time. He's had preseason, a couple of games and he's had time to work with his team.

"We don't really see anything different from a tactical standpoint than we saw last year. I know he needs time but then again in this particular game, yes, I would've liked to have seen someone hooked in the middle of the first half whether it be a centre-half or a midfielder. Make a change, let everybody know, put them on notice."

Though the changes within the game weren't as radical as Howard suggested, after the game the Dutch manager made some significant moves to improve his side.

Since that point there have been some significant changes to the football Ten Hag has looked to play. He has employed a deeper block and put less emphasis on playing out from the back to combat some of the team's weaknesses and also made some changes to the starting XI.
