How Manchester United players are responding to Erik ten Hag changes

Former Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley believes that his old team have a good chance of winning silverware under Erik ten Hag this season.

United started the campaign badly with back to back defeats against Brighton and Hove Albion and Brentford. Ten Hag managed to settle the ship though and a run of victories, including at home to Liverpool and Arsenal, catapulted them back up the table.

The heavy loss at the Etihad Stadium in the Manchester derby could have easily slashed United's confidence but wins against Omonia Nicosia and Everton have returned the feel good factor at Old Trafford. Speaking to Sky Bet, Cleverley claimed that he has been impressed by the Reds and that silverware in Ten Hag's first season cannot be ruled out.

"The early signs for Manchester United are good," he explained. "Erik ten Hag looks like the right manager to take them forward.

"The players seem to be buying into that – as a fan, you want to see them dig in when times get a bit sticky. They showed that resilience against Everton, when they went a goal down early on and put in what looked like a dominant performance – it’s those kinds of performances that create confidence, and they certainly have the players to have a chance of winning silverware."

Ahead of this weekend's Premier League fixtures, United sit just a point outside the Champions League places. Ten Hag's team will face a tough challenge on Sunday though when they host Eddie Howe's Newcastle who are also knocking on the door of the top four.
