Threave Rovers make Kilsyth pay the penalty with 4-2 West of Scotland League victory
Threave Rovers made Kilsyth Athletic pay the penalty on Saturday.
After giving away a spot-kick themselves, Threave were awarded two first half penalties which – combined with two other goals – saw them lead 4-1 at the break.
The hosts pulled one back in the second half but it wasn’t enough to stop the Castle Douglas side heading home with all three points.
Gaffer Danny Dunglinson said: “We said beforehand it was a six pointer and it’s always a tough place to go.
“They went 1-0 up early on but we reacted well. The penalty we got to make it 1-1 from their perspective was probably harsh.
“Their penalty was a stonewall penalty but a lot of time referees will look to even things out. It was good for us but from their perspective they’ll say it was a change of momentum.
“We were well on top at that point, even at 1-0 down it was a very even game. The equaliser was probably going to come anyway, it’s maybe fortunate how we got it.
“It was pleasing because after the previous week, we were hoping for a reaction. Things don’t go our way to start but they reacted well and were in total control.
“Scoring to go 3-1 up and getting another penalty killed the game. To get the goal right on half time knocked the stuffing out of them.”
A Matthew McFarlane penalty gave Kilsyth an early lead before Ross Irving converted Threave’s first spot-kick.
Soon after Harry Officer fired them in front before Jamie Thompson quickly extended the lead.
And just before the break the Castle Douglas side were given another penalty, Irving again doing the business from the spot.
Kilsyth got a goal back in bizarre circumstances early in the second half when the wind helped a kick from goalie Kenny Giles go all the way into the net.
