Threave Rovers caretaker gaffer describes beaten opponents as best his side have faced

Threave Rovers caretaker boss Paul McGinley says Saturday’s opponents were the best team his side has faced since he took charge.

The Castle Douglas side came from a goal down to see off Lanark United 3-2.

And McGinley admitted: “It was a pleasing performance because since I’ve been in that’s definitely the best team we’ve played. They’ve a lot of quality all over the pitch.

“They were a tough outfit to crack, they were well set-up and matched us up. It maybe nullified the middle of the park, it was 4-3-3 v 4-3-3 so it was quite a tough battle.

“They were missing out the middle of the park a lot, very direct, and with the wind behind them it caused us a lot of problems in the first half so we had to dig deep.

“We were too spread in terms of how we were pressing the ball but we got away with it. We could have been a couple of goals down by half-time on chances just with their direct play.

“In the second half we came out the traps well, went 3-1 up and were looking to control the game from that. It was unfortunate we lost a goal which gave them a bit of impetus and brought them back into it.

“I thought in the last 10 or 15 minutes the game management was really good. The experienced players carried us through, killed the game off, and saw things out.

“There is a good spine of the team with Graham Wright, Hugh Cameron, Ritchie Maxwell and Danny Dunglinson – and you’ve got Lewis Sloan and Dan Orsi as well. It’s a good base to work off.”

A header gave Lanark the lead before Dunglinson levelled from the spot following a handball.

The veteran put Threave in front after the break with a spectacular strike and Dylan Cairnie was on hand to double the lead after Harry Officer’s shot was saved.
