Albion Rovers can't just expect to beat Kilwinning Rangers, warns boss Sandy Clark

Albion Rovers boss Sandy Clark warns that his side can’t just turn up and expect to beat Kilwinning Rangers in the South Challenge Cup this weekend.

Rovers, who are 12th in the Lowland League following their 2-1 win over Caledonian Braves, travel to Kilwinning, who are sixth in the West of Scotland First Division.

Clark knows his side will be expected to progress to the fifth round, but will make sure that’s not an attitude that’s shared by his players.

“We’ve had Kilwinning watched, they’re a good team,” said Clark. “They’re very competitive with a very experienced manager and assistant manager [Ex-East Kilbride duo Chris Aitken and Ian Durrant].

“Without any shadow of a doubt, it’s a cup tie in Ayrshire, against a team with a good tradition, and a well-organised group that we will be against.

“We’re capable of doing well and winning the match, but we’re going to have to earn it.

“We want to win it, we want to keep winning in the cup games.

“We’ll be favourites, on paper, but they’re playing at home, so that makes a big difference to things.

“To earn the right to win the game you’ve got to work hard and win the battle, then pass the ball.

“You don’t just turn up and it happens.

“We’ve watched Kilwinning already, we know where they’re good and where they’re not so good.

“We know they’ve got an experienced management team, so we know exactly what we’re going into.

“We’re going to have to match them from the start, and hopefully our quality shines through as the game goes on.”
