Threave Rovers caretaker believes high winds should lead to postponements

Threave Rovers caretaker gaffer Paul McGinley reckons games should be called off in high winds.

The Castle Douglas side drew 1-1 with Greenock Juniors on Saturday – the game being switched to Largs due to the fears over the impact of the weather on the Inverclyde side’s regular pitch.

And that, combined with the impact of Storm Kathleen, created what McGinley described as a “horrendous” match.

He said: “I made a point of speaking to their players after the game so I wasn’t getting a false view or excuses from our boys.

“It was a non-spectacle, it spoiled the game and you saw that with games all over at the weekend.

“In normal circumstances I’d be an advocate of calling the game off due to the wind because it spoils it – although not on Saturday as it meant we’d have had to go to Greenock midweek.

“The game’s about those that play and those that pay. The players don’t enjoy it and the fans certainly didn’t seem to enjoy it too much.”

After a goalless first half, Daren Paton scored for the “home side”.

Threave, who had Ross Thomson sent off, were given a chance to equalise when Finlay Kennedy was fouled inside the box and Danny Dunglinson did the honours from the spot.

That point, as well as the midweek draw against Lesmahagow, left Threave fifth in the third division of the West of Scotland League.

They’re seven points behind Finnart, who currently hold the third and final promotion spot but have played three games more than McGinley’s side. Fourth placed Bellshill Athletic are two points behind Finnart and have played one fewer game than Threave.

McGinley said: “We really should be sitting with maximum points from the last eight days. You could look at it as four points dropped or two gained
