Thomas Frank takes swipe at 'reckless' Man City star after Brentford impressed at the Etihad

Brentford manager Thomas Frank has hit out at Man City midfielder Mateo Kovacic for his 'reckless' challenge on Bees forward Yoane Wissa.

The DR Congo international fired Brentford into a shock 1-0 lead over the Premier League champions on Saturday, only for an Erling Haaland brace to turn the game around and secure a vital 2-1 win for City.

But the 28-year-old was forced off before half-time and is set for an injury assessment this week ahead of Brentford's trip to Leyton Orient in the third round of the Carabao Cup.

And Frank took aim at Kovacic for his challenge on the forward as he aired his frustration over Wissa's injury.

"It could be a shorter one or it could be a longer one, I actually have no clue,” said Frank. “We need to assess him tomorrow.

"It was a reckless tackle, I thought, from Kovacic, just going through the man, from behind him. I know it's probably not a red card, but it's frustrating that it's led to an injury."

But after Pep Guardiola described Brentford's performance as 'extraordinary', Frank revealed his pride about his team's performance at the Etihad Stadium.

“I think in the first 25 minutes, if Manchester City are the best team of all, then we were world class," Frank added.

"We were clearly on top, we were tight, but also the best team and did something only Liverpool and Arsenal do - we had more possession, more shots on target, more XG (expected goals).

"I'm 50-50 - frustrated for not getting anything out of the game but also extremely proud of what we did against Man
