BREAKING: Man dies after being hit by car on M62 with motorway fully shut - latest updates

A man has died after being hit by a car on the M62 - with a stretch of the motorway fully shut this morning.

The man - a pedestrian - was struck by a car on the motorway near Salford at around 12.15am today (Tuesday), Greater Manchester Police said. He was sadly pronounced dead on the scene.

A 25-year-old man remained at the scene was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has been taken to custody.

The M62 remains fully shut in both directions as accident investigation work is carried out. It is closed between junction 12 for the M60 Eccles Interchange and junction 11 for Birchwood.

Drivers have been urged to take a different route while police work on the scene. The closure is expected to remain in place throughout the morning.

According to traffic alert service Inrix, on the eastbound side delays are back to junction 23 for the M6.

On the westbound side, delays are back to the Swinton Interchange.

Traffic is also queuing along the A57 Manchester Road as traffic diverts.

Road users travelling westbound are advised to follow the hollow square diversion symbol visible on local road signs.

Road users travelling eastbound are advised to follow the solid triangle diversion symbol visible on local road signs.

Accident investigation work is being carried out between junction 12 and junction 11 of the M62.
