'They don't count!' - Paul Scholes jokes about Man United record after Marcus Rashford goal

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes joked that Marcus Rashford's Europa League goals "don't count" towards his European tally as the striker closes in on his goalscoring record.

Rashford surpassed Cristiano Ronaldo to become United's sixth-highest goalscorer in European football, with the England international netting his 27th of the campaign with a wonderful long-range strike to give Erik ten Hag's side the victory at Real Betis on Thursday. He has now moved up to 25 goals for the club on the European stage.

The 25-year-old is looking to move past Scholes in the charts and is just one strike behind the former Reds midfielder. Scholes bagged 26 goals in his European career with United - two goals behind Denis Law (28) who is fourth on the club's list.

After the game on Thursday night, Scholes was informed that Rashford was closing in on his tally, but the former England midfielder was keen to argue his case with a joke about the Europa League.

"Europa League goals don't count!" Scholes joked on BT Sport. "I've only got two Europa League goals, they don't count. I'm only kidding, scoring any goal for Manchester United is special, he's been lucky to play so many years in the Champions League, I'm sure when United get to the Champions League next year - touch wood - he will improve on that tally massively."

When asked about the importance of keeping the England international fit, former United man Owen Hargreaves added: "It's everything, their season relies on Marcus really, look, Casemiro's been great, Bruno's been great, but if you think about it, without Marcus' goals, United would be in a really difficult position.
