Manchester United got their season off to a winning start but it was hardly an inspiring display.

United only just managed to scrape past Wolves 1-0 thanks to a Raphael Varane header. The visitors only hired new manager Gary O'Neil five days ago but they were by far the better team throughout the match.

If it wasn't for poor finishing from their forwards and heroics from debutant Andre Onana it would have been a disappointing evening. But even the goalkeeper got away with one in added time when he clattered into Sasa Kalajdzic in the box but wasn't punished.

Reunions everywhere

Before the drab first half brought the mood down a touch, it was a bubbling atmosphere at Old Trafford with plenty of smiling faces. The biggest of which belonged to legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who was brimming from ear to ear.

The Scot was down on the pitch before kick-off and reunited with two of his former players as he held chats with iconic defender Jaap Stam and former goalkeeper Tim Howard.
