“There's an acceptance" - Journalist drops interesting Wolves transfer claim on £51m star

Wolverhampton Wanderers made a big push to sign Sporting Lisbon midfielder Matheus Nunes this summer but have accepted that they will likely miss out on his services, according to Ryan Taylor or the Daily Express.

Bruno Lage has overseen a quiet summer of business at Molineux but there is still plenty of time to add to his squad ahead of the September 1 deadline.

Nunes has emerged as one of Portugal’s most promising talents with the 23 year old already racking up 99 appearances for Sporting.

Liverpool and Manchester City have both been linked with the player this summer but Wolves also hold an interest in the player reportedly valued at £51 million.

Former Liverpool midfielder Abel Xavier has claimed that it is inevitable Nunes will leave this summer, telling Desporto Au Minuto: “I am very close to the structure of Liverpool, in fact. There is a lot of talk about the virtues of Portugal and obviously have Matheus Nunes rumoured.

“I believe that Sporting will not be able to hold a player of this size due to his quality, which means he would adapt to any top English team. His departure from Sporting is a matter of time.”

Taylor understands that Wolves have held a serious interest in signing the eight-cap Portugal international this summer and made a move to sign him this summer.

However, with the winter World Cup on the horizon, the reporter believes that the West Midlands side will inevitably miss out.

Taylor told GIVEMESPORT: “I think with Nunes, there’s an acceptance he’s probably not going to join. They did actually make a big push for him earlier in the window.
