The unusual bucket list request that saw fearless Wigan gran climb 235ft to top of Blackpool rollercoaster

We are always told to ‘live life to the fullest’, often writing ourselves bucket lists with goals and challenges to achieve in our lifetime - with many people opting to complete them in their youth.

However, 73-year-old Maureen Carroll has proved that you don’t need to be restricted by age to do daring challenges.

Maureen, from Wigan, has since retired from her role as communications officer for Greater Manchester Police, has kept herself occupied completing numerous tasks on her bucket list.

Amongst the goals achieved so far on her bucket list have been to read the weather forecast for BBC Radio Manchester and to announce flight information at Manchester Airport.

However, it was one unusual request at Blackpool's Pleasure Beach Resort that led to the daredevil Gran scaling a 235ft structure.

Originally, Maureen wrote a handwritten letter to the resort with the request of entertaining guests at Pleasure Beach playing the role of Gromit, the silent sidekick from Wallace and Gromit. The pair often make appearances and greet guests outside of their ride, Wallace and Gromit’s Thrill-O-Matic.

In the letter, she wrote: “I am 73 years but fit and well. I hope with all my heart you would consider this wish for me.”

Getting the chance to play mascot as Gromit, she spoke about the joy it brought her. "I was smiling the whole time inside the costume.," she explained. "The children’s faces were just wonderful. Pleasure Beach have been tremendous – I can’t say how grateful I am or the love I have for everyone here for making it possible.”
