The time someone went for a swim in the Trafford Centre food court and three other amazing moments at iconic shopping destination

A lot of weird and wonderful things have happened in Manchester in the past 25-years, no more so than at the Trafford Centre.

Having just celebrated its landmark 25th birthday, the Trafford Centre has seen millions of customers pass through its doors. And while many visit for the giant complex for shopping and entertainment purposes, its special events - including performances and celebrity book signings - also bring in huge crowds.

But every now and again, something out-of-the-ordinary will make visitors to the Trafford Centre do a double take and stop in their tracks. From pranksters to eccentric famous faces being spotted in the crowd, here are four amazing Trafford Centre moments through the years.

In 2016, a half-naked internet prankster left onlookers stunned after he went for a dip in the Trafford Centre food court's pool. Video footage showed Lewis Ellis walking through the shopping centre in a life-jacket, swimming trunks and wearing diving goggles.

And then as his friends film him he was captured jumping on to the side of the Orient’s pool before diving off and into the water. Moments later, security were on the scene to get 25-year-old Lewis, from Haslingden, out of the pool and into a waiting towel. Afterwards he was quickly escorted out of the centre.

In 2016, a couple who had scooped £12.4m on the lottery went for a shopping spree in true millionaire style. Landing at the Trafford Centre in a helicopter, they couldn’t fit their massive haul into the boot.
