The Mancunian Way: Questions to answer for GMP

Greater Manchester Police has come under intense scrutiny after a video emerged yesterday showing an armed officer kicking and stamping on a man's head during an incident at Manchester Airport.

The clip went viral on social media and the force responded, saying they were called to an 'altercation' between members of the public in Terminal two, before the officers were subjected to a 'violent assault' while trying to make an arrest.

A Greater Manchester Police (GMP) officer has been 'removed from operational duties' after the video emerged and the force has also referred itself to the watchdog the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), acknowledging the footage captures a 'truly shocking event' that they 'understand creates alarm.' The police watchdog is now investigating 'the level of force' used.

The response has done nothing to quell anger. Last night, hundreds of people gathered outside the force’s divisional police headquarters in Rochdale to protest. Wearing face coverings they chanted "GMP shame on you", and others present let off fireworks. A witness estimated there were around 200 people in attendance.

Today, our region’s leaders have responded to the incident. Speaking on BBC Radio Manchester, Andy Burnham said: “It’s a serious incident and it’s caused a huge amount of concern. Many people have seen the footage. I had the reaction that most people had, and it’s very disturbing.

“I have now had the opportunity to look at the full footage and the events leading up to it. Let me be really clear: Firstly I would say it’s a fast-moving and complicated situation in a challenging location. It’s not clear either way, I would say, and there are issues for both sides.”
