Beer and flares thrown in the air as two groups clash in protests in Plymouth

Beers and flares were thrown in the air as two groups of protesters clashed in Plymouth. Devon and Cornwall Police officers, donning helmets, began dividing the two groups as chants were shouted on Monday night (August 5).

It comes after police issued warnings to ensure there was not a repeat of the violent responses across other parts of the country. Plymouth City Council leader Tudor Evans said earlier today he was disappointed at the news that organisers like former EDL leader Tommy Robinson has now put Plymouth on his list of places for a "stop the boats" protest.

A Stand Up To Racism protest began peacefully at around 6pm, PlymouthLive reports, but by around 7.30pm, the second 'stop the boats' protest was well underway with both groups clashing.

Police said officers were subjected to violence, with a cop van also damaged in the disorder. One woman, on the anti-fascist side, was reportedly hit on the head by a flying item.

Around 100 Stand Up To Racism demonstrators first gathered in Guildhall Square, ahead of the first planned protest. Shortly after, a smoke flare and a can of cider were hurled into the air by counter protesters.

Giving an update on the escalating situation, Devon and Cornwall Police said: "We have seen a level of violence towards officers in Plymouth and a police van has been damaged.

"We are taking action against individuals who are intent on criminality. Arrests are ongoing."
