The Manchester United No.7s who created 'curse' that Mason Mount hopes to end

Manchester United's new £60m signing Mason Mount was confirmed as the new bearer of the iconic number seven shirt and squad number on Wednesday and he will hope not to follow in the fateful footsteps of the shirt’s most recent wearers.

Erik ten Hag’s decision to give the squad number has been reported to be a vote of confidence in Mount and an indication of the vital role he will have in United’s side from next season.

Until Cristiano Ronaldo left for a world record fee to Real Madrid in 2009, the shirt was worn by iconic figures such as Bryan Robson, George Best, David Beckham and Eric Cantona. After the Portuguese forward, six players donned the shirt and scored just 25 goals between them in over a decade.
