Cordon in place as man remains handcuffed to gates of Buckingham Palace with 'self-inflicted slash injuries'

Cordons remained in place outside Buckingham Palace on Thursday night (July 6) after a man handcuffed himself to the gates.

Metropolitan Police said they were called out to the incident, where a man, believed to be in his 30s, approached the gates shortly before 5.25pm.

He then handcuffed himself to the gates before threatening to harm himself, as a number of Met Police officers remained at the scene trying to talk to the man and resolve the incident.

In an update almost four hours later, at 9pm, the force said the man remained handcuffed to the front gates with 'a number of self-inflicted slash injuries' and a large cordons in place around the area.

"Cordons remain in place and situation still ongoing," a statement said. "Officers are still speaking to the man, who has sustained a number of self-inflicted slash injuries. Police are working to bring the situation to a safe end as quickly as possible."

A number of police vehicles and ambulances were pictured at the scene on Thursday with a large cordon erected around the front gates as the area was cleared by emergency services.

The incident comes a day after King Charles' coronation was officially marked in Scotland, with a number of protesters booing and chanting during the occasion in Edinburgh. A total of 64 arrests were also made by The Met on the day of King Charles' coronation, on May 8.
