The ‘hidden gem’ Greater Manchester beauty spot you can only visit once a month - and it’s open this weekend

Nestled in the Goyt Valley is a ‘hidden gem’ beauty spot with beautiful lakes, gardens and woodland which is a perfect place to spend a sunny day. But there’s a catch - it’s only open one day a month.

The Roman Lakes in Marple is found down a country lane and features a tea room, a small play area for kids, scenic lakeside walks and cycling trails. One visitor described the lakes as a ‘hidden gem’ on TripAdvisor, and it’s easy to see why - given that they’re tucked away down a quiet country lane.

Following a fire in 1892 the mill was destroyed and the millponds were transformed into a pleasure resort in the late 19th century, named after the 16th century Roman Bridge which crosses the River Goyt nearby.

Edwardian visitors would go boating on the lake and take part in tea dances and it quickly became a popular spot for leisure and pleasure. Since 1952 one family has run the site and it’s now used as a wedding and event venue, with regular open days throughout the year.

The Roman Lakes open to the public on the last Sunday of the month, which means you can visit this weekend. It’s open from 10am to 3pm and it’s free to enter with no need to book, dogs are allowed but need to be kept on a lead.

There will be live music from Stockport Ukulele Players and visitors can stop by the tea room which serves up homemade cakes, soups, toasties, refreshments and ice cream. On the last Saturday of the month, the Roman Lakes hosts tea dances, which include live music and a two course meal with funds raised going
