The Greater Manchester chippy named one of the best places in the UK for fish and chips

A chippy in Greater Manchester has been given the prestigious honour of being named one of the best fish and chips shops in the country.

Last month, two takeaways from the city-region made it to the shortlist of 40 to be named Fish & Chip Takeaway of the Year 2024 at the National Fish and Chip Awards, which is run by the National Federation of Fish Friers.

But following tough competition, the shortlist has now been whittled down even more to a final 20 ahead of the ‘chippy world cup’ awards ceremony next February.

While the Town Street Fryer in Marple Bridge, Stockport, made it into the top 40, it has not progressed further in the shortlist. However, Chips @ No.8 in Prestwich is still in the running.

The Bury takeaway, on Clifton Road, is noted for its two-storey mural of Mark E. Smith of The Fall on the side of its building. It has plenty of awards to its name and even made it to the final 20 at last year’s National Fish and Chip Awards.

Earlier this year, owner Dan Edwards said he was gutted not to make it to the final ten of the 2023 awards but was pleased with his staff for making it so far. Speaking to the M.E.N at the time, Dan said: “The team can be incredibly proud of themselves to have got as far as we did in our first year entering the competition.

“It was a great experience and we’re stronger for it. We know what we have to do now to improve and we’re already working hard to deliver an even greater experience. I know we’re banging out some of the best fish and chips in the country.”
