The chances of your car being stolen in Greater Manchester varies greatly depending on where you live. Our map reveals the riskiest places to park in the region.
Based on crime recorded figures, 6,586 cars, vans, motorbikes and other vehicles were reported stolen in the year ending July 2024 in Greater Manchester. In 2022, some 8,903 were stolen. In 2023 the number was 8,111.
The figure for England and Wales for the year ending July 2024 was 133,000. That was around 3,000 fewer than the previous year, but nearly 12,000 more than in the 12 months to July 2022, when there were 121,300 crime reports of stolen vehicles.

Using vehicle licensing figures showing the number of cars, vans and motorbikes registered in each area, it's possible to roughly estimate the likelihood of a vehicle being stolen.
There were variations in Greater Manchester, with Manchester being the riskiest place with 1,371 cars stolen in 2024; 1,772 in 2023; and 1,745 in 2022. That is a total of 4,888 vehicles stolen in three years - the equivalent of 82 thefts every 10,000 vehicles. The odds of your car being stolen in the city in three years are 122/1.

The next highest area in the region is Oldham. In 2024 there were 732 thefts; last year 914; and in 2022, 913. In three years 2,609 vehicles were taken - 77 for every 10,000. The odds of your car being taken in the borough are 130/1.
Salford has the third highest figures. In 2024 a total of 630 vehicles were taken; 753 in 2023; and 884 in 2022. In the last three years 2,267 were taken - 66 for every 10,000. The
