The glaring Celtic and Rangers inconsistency that proves handball rule is 'real problem' for Scottish football

The handball rule is causing serious problems within the SPFL - and a glaring inconsistency in Celtic and Rangers' recent games proves it.

That's the view of Mark Wilson who reckons it was "ridiculous" to award Hearts a penalty for handball against Tomoki Iwata...especially when Rangers were denied an identical one just a few days earlier. Referee Don Robertson is at the centre of the fallout after Celtic's defeat at Tynecastle on Sunday after he sent off Yang for an high boot and awarded the Jambos a spot-kick for a handball against Iwata. Whistler Robertson hadn't given either initially, but on both occasions he was called over to the VAR screen by John Beaton, and changed his mind each time.

They were both highly contentious decisions which set the tone for the Hoops' 2-0 defeat, one which could prove costly in the tussle with Rangers for the title. The handball rule has been a major cause for debate this season and Iwata's curiously came after Lewis Mayo wasn't penalised for a notably similar one in the dying stages of Rangers' win over KIlmarnock last Wednesday.

And pundit Wilson, speaking to Sky Sports, couldn't believe the inconsistency on show. He said: "It was ridiculous. I'd hate to be a defender in this day and age. The ball hits your arm and you don't know what you're going to get, it's potluck. We saw the Rangers game midweek, Lewis Mayo outstretched his arm and stopped a cross, it wasn't deemed a penalty.

"Now we see that one from Iwata, he's not even looking at the ball, he's looking away and it hits his arm. An incredible decision, I don't think it was a penalty at all.
