The four Manchester United players who could get shirt number upgrades next season

Manchester United have one eye on the transfer window as Erik ten Hag maps out plans for next season.

Having allowed Cristiano Ronaldo to leave mid-campaign under controversial circumstances, United want to sign England captain Harry Kane as his long-term replacement as they, also, target a dynamic midfielder. Harry Maguire, Alex Telles and Anthony Martial are among those who could be sold.

With other outgoings on the horizon, too, there could be several alterations when it comes to shirt numbers; including the famous number 7 shirt vacated by Ronaldo upon his departure. Of course, incomings need to be accommodated, but Ten Hag could sanction upgrades for current squad members.

Here are four players who might be knocking at his door in that regard;

Raphael Varane (19): What you might, normally, regard as first-pick squad numbers for defenders were at a premium when Varane was signed from Real Madrid last summer. Having worn number 4 for France prior to his international retirement, that could be one option on the (likely) proviso Phil Jones moves on. Varane also wore number 2 and 5 - currently assigned to Victor Lindelof and Maguire - throughout his decade at Madrid.

Diogo Dalot (20): There are a few moving parts here amid mounting speculation over Sweden captain Lindelof and his future. United have, also, been tentatively linked with a new right-back and that might have to be factored in when it comes to who could grab the number 2 or number 3 shirt - held by Marseille loanee Eric Bailly - moving forward.
