Peter Schmeichel criticises three Manchester United players and questions Erik ten Hag substitution vs Spurs

Peter Schmeichel is puzzled about Erik ten Hag's decision to take off Aaron Wan-Bissaka during Manchester United’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham.

The Reds were 2-1 up when the right-back was hooked with 20 minutes to go. Diogo Dalot, who started at left-back, switched over to his usual right flank spot as Tyrell Malacia came on to feature on the left.

United looked notably more fragile at the back and Schmeichel questioned Malacia’s impact on the game, especially critiquing his decision-making for Spurs’ equaliser through Son Heung-min on 79 minutes.

He was also unsure why Ten Hag decided to disturb the back line and take off Wan-Bissaka who was playing “really good”. The former United goalkeeper told Premier League Productions: “That second goal, I don’t know what Malacia is doing.

“The ball runs straight past him and he just looks at it. You have just come on, you have to make some sort of impact, you have a job to do.

"I’m not sure why he [Ten Hag] took Wan-Bissaka off because he was really good today. We’re 2-1 up, you don’t change it, it is not that bad where you take your best defender off.”

As in Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final win over Brighton, Luke Shaw partnered Victor Lindelof at centre-half against Tottenham with Lisandro Martinez out for the season and Raphael Varane also sidelined for a prolonged period.

Schmeichel was not impressed with either starter during Pedro Porro’s strike that sparked the home side’s comeback on 56 minutes following Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford’s first-half goals.
