The family life of Noel and Liam Gallagher - and their mum's role in Oasis reunion

They are synonymous with Burnage, but it was actually in the inner-city Manchester area of Longsight that the story of one of music's most famous sibling relationships actually began.

Famed for its Irish community, it was there that Noel and Liam Gallagher's Irish parents met and the pair were born - and initially brought up.

Peggy, full name Margaret Sweeney, from Charlestown in County Mayo, one of 11 children, moved to Manchester in 1961 when she was just 18. She worked as a housekeeper and childminder. It is thought that seven of the 11 moved to Manchester, with Noel later saying they 'congregated around a five-square mile area'.

It was at this time that Peggy met compatriot Tommy, originally from County Meath just north of Dublin. He was one of six siblings and had left home at the age of 17. They married at the Holy Name Church in Chorlton-on-Medlock in 1965.

They moved into their home first home, a now-demolished council house on Sandycroft Street in Longsight, shortly after. They had three children, the oldest being Paul Anthony Gallagher, the only of the three siblings not to join Oasis. .

Noel Thomas David Gallagher was born on May 29, 1967. Both Paul and Noel, who are said to have had stammers as children, attended St. Robert's Primary School in Longsight.

The family unit was completed five years later by the arrival of William John Paul Gallagher, who would become known as Liam, on September 21, 1972. Both Liam and Noel have spoken of the fractious and volatile nature of family life.
