The country’s best pubs as named by CAMRA - including Greater Manchester’s ‘real ale lovers delight’

A pub in Oldham described as being a ‘real ale lovers delight’ has been named the best pub in Greater Manchester as CAMRA unveils its top 16 pubs across the country.

The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) has unveiled the top regional pubs that will compete for the National Pub of the Year 2023 prize later this year. Each venue was rated on their atmosphere, décor, welcome, service, inclusivity, overall impression and, most importantly, the quality of live beer, real cider and perry.

The Fox & Pine on Greaves Street in Oldham was previously named Greater Manchester's Pub of the Year at the Great British Beer Festival. Owners Chris and Michelle Riley recently told the M.E.N they were honoured to be recognised.

Chris said: "To be in the top 16 is superb. All our staff are chuffed to bits, and we've got some brilliant customers and hopefully we might get a few more visitors off the back of this.”

The hospitality veterans who have worked for a number of brewers and pubs over the years will now compete against 15 other regional pubs for the top national prize next year.

Amongst their competition will be the Turks Head in St Helens, which was named as CAMRA’s best pub in Merseyside and Cheshire. The Tudor-style 1870s pub features a large whisky and gin selection as well as a host of real ales and ciders on 14 hand pulls.

Named the best pub in Wales, the Magic Dragon Brewery Tap in Wrexham was recognised for its ‘compact interior’. The single-roomed pub serves three of its own beers, including a dark ale, from a wood-panelled bar and six handpumps.
