The common beauty product you should never store in the bathroom, according to expert

Most of us probably don't think twice about keeping our beauty products in the bathroom, as this is often where we use them - so it would make sense to store them here.

But according to one expert, the warm and humid environment of the bathroom can end up wreaking havoc on our favourite products, especially one very popular one - fake tan.

This is a staple for many of us here in the UK, especially during the colder months when catching a natural tan isn't possible. But if you currently store it in the bathroom, you might want to reconsider this, according to St Moriz founder Melanie Brownlow.

She says the bathroom is not the ideal place to keep your fake tan, as it can drastically slash its shelf life and ruin the product before you get the chance to use it.

The expert noted: "All beauty products have a shelf life, and self tanning products are no exception so it’s important to know the tell-tale signs of an out-of-date product. The main indications that the product is close to expiry are discolouration and a change in smell, but this also differs between different product types.

"For example, it is often easier to spot discoloration of white lotions - such as a gradual tan - compared to a classic tinted mousse. However, with an expired mousse, you may notice it starts to appear slightly green. This is usually the result of prolonged exposure to air, causing it to oxidise over time."

According to Melanie, most fake tans have a shelf life of around six months after opening. After this time is up, you might begin to notice the product becoming less effective, as the active ingredients become compromised.
