The city you can fly to from Manchester Airport for less than £20 that has more than 30 Christmas markets

We might be enjoying an Indian summer, but pretty soon it'll be time to start thinking about Christmas. And if you're planning a festive getaway this year there's one European city that should definitely be on your radar.

Hamburg in northern Germany might be best-known, to UK tourists at least, for its connection to the Beatles and its infamous red light district. But the bustling port also really pulls out all the stops at Christmas-time.

More than 30 Christmas markets are held across the city. And the really good news is you can fly to Hamburg in December for less than £20.

At the time of writing Easyjet has direct flights on sale from Manchester for £18.99, while a return will set you back just £45. The flight is around two and half hours long.

And, with all the money you've saved on plane tickets, you'll have plenty of cash to splash on glühwein and bratwurst. Probably the most famous market is held outside the impressive city hall.

Here, stalls and huts are elaborately decorated with lights, while the goods on offer tend towards the more artisan and handmade. It's also one of the best places to try local treats and specialities such as Nuremburg gingerbread or schmalzkuchen, fried lard cakes covered in sugar.

But, if you're after something a bit more risqué, head to St Pauli, home of the aforementioned red light district and the notorious Reeperbahn. Here a giant disco ball towers over stalls selling erotic toys alongside more traditional wares, while a stage hosts live music and variety shows.
