Black History Month 2023 - all the events taking place in Greater Manchester

Held in October every year, Black History Month is a chance to celebrate and recognise the contributions and achievements black people in the UK and around the world have made.

The month-long celebration is also a chance to reflect on where things stand and to tackle the racism that still exists today and provides an opportunity to look back on history and discuss important issues that may not always be at the forefront of people’s conversations.

The theme for 2023 will be Saluting our Sisters - highlighting the crucial role that black women have played in shaping history, inspiring change, and building communities. It also pays homage to black women who have had ‘contributions ignored, ideas appropriated, and voices silenced’.

To coincide with Black History Month, there will be a number of events taking place across the city-region throughout October. These include a comic festival, as well as exhibitions, live music, talks and theatre productions.

There will also be performances from the likes of comedian Sophie Duker and music legend Gabrielle.

A Bridgerton-themed painting workshop and panel discussion will take place in Central Library on October 2 (5.30-7.30pm).

Kiesha Thompson, Artistic Director of the Contact Theatre, will be joined by Cllr Erinma Bell MBE, peace campaigner and Deputy Lieutenant for Greater Manchester, international artist Kevin Dalton-Johnson and Ubuntu Festival Director Carol-Ann Whitehead as they discuss Bridgerton, colour blind casting, changing the narrative and their experiences within theatre, TV and film.
