'Thanks for your hospitality': Top Boxing trainer Brian 'BoMac' McIntyre speaks out after release from prison on gun charges

One of the world's top Boxing trainers has thanked 'nice and cool' guards and inmates at a prison for their 'hospitality' after spending five weeks on remand after a gun was found in his luggage at Manchester Airport.

Brian Macintyre, 53, known as 'BoMac', was preparing to fly back to Atlanta in the US after training Chris Eubank JR for his rematch against Liam Smith at the AO Arena, when a gun and a magazine were found in his suitcase in Terminal 2 at the airport on, on September 3.

The Smith and Wesson .45 self-loading pistol and seven rounds of ammunition were seized and McIntyre, who also trains the undisputed welterweight world champion Terence Crawford, was arrested.

After appearing at Stockport Magistrates Court the following day he was remanded into custody and spent five weeks at HMP Birmingham until his appearance at Manchester Crown Court yesterday (Monday, October 9).

In the UK possession of a firearm carries a usually mandatory five-year prison sentence. However, at the hearing, the Recorder of Manchester Nicholas Dean accepted the well-travelled trainer had forgotten the weapon was inside his luggage.

In a basis of plea, accepted by the prosecution, he put the weapon in the suitcase for a training camp in Colorado Springs ahead of a fight in Las Vegas, and there was 'never a need to remove it' and he forgot it was there.

There were also a series of glowing character testimonials including one from world welterweight boxing champion Terence Crawford who flew in to support his coach.
