Tesco 'evacuated' and air ambulance lands as man taken ill at suprmarket

A supermarket was 'evacuated' as a large emergency services response descended after a shopper was taken ill. Customers were reportedly asked to leave the Tesco store in Greenfield, Saddleworth, this afternoon (May 7).

North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) confirmed it was called out to the supermarket, on Chew Valley Road, at 12.06pm. A spokesman for NWAS stated that a 'man has been taken to hospital after falling ill'.

An air ambulance was among the vehicles sent out to the supermarket as part of a major emergency response. "An ambulance, a response vehicle, a critical care Helimed team, an advanced paramedic, and a senior paramedic all attended," the NWAS spokesman added.

Multiple witnesses reported that a man had fallen ill at a checkout inside the supermarket. Staff reportedly evacuated the store to allow the emergency services to carry out their work.

It's understood the store was due to reopen this afternoon following the incident. Tesco has been approached for comment.
