Tell us if you think drivers over 60 should retake their test

A study from YouGov and CarTakeBack.com found that just under half of people believe that drivers over 60 should be required to retake their test. Some 49 per cent of the people asked agreed on the matter, with 10 per cent even going as far as saying that all drivers from 86 years old should be banned.

With people clearly divided over the issue, we want to know your thoughts on whether retaking their driving test should be compulsory for over 60s.

Some readers have already taken issue with the suggestion, with one saying: "That's ridiculous. My dad is 72 and is an excellent driver, having driven most of his life. There are crap and dangerous drivers no matter what age."

Another added: "People convicted of speeding, drinking while under the influence of drink or drugs or not concentrating because they are on a mobile phone.

"These are the people who should have to retest every year no matter what age they are. There are good and bad drivers of every age."

One read pointed out that many people over 60 still work, saying: " 60 is NOT elderly. People have to work until age 66 before they get their pensions."

Some turned the attention on younger drivers, with one reader adding: "It's some of the young drivers that need to be off the road. In all the years I've been driving I've never had any problems with the elderly driving and making mistakes."
