Are people ordering too many takeaways? Tell us what you think

After a tough few days, settling down with a takeaway in the evening can be a great pleasure. But are we all relying too much on the tasty convenience of having ready made food dropped off at our doors?

Whether it's a necessity when you're too tired to cook or a treat for the family, takeaways are a common fixture across UK households with a study from the British Takeaway Campaign finding that they now account for 17% of all household expenditure on food.

However, this isn't happy news for everyone, with McDonalds customers complaining about long wait times as restaurants become swamped with delivery drivers.

Responding to the wait times at McDonalds, one person said: "The queues are getting ridiculous you cant even get on to the site at Bury as they are queued back on to the duel carriageway most nights."

Another reader added: "Just the same in cafes, too busy keeping delivery drivers happy at the expense of sit down customers. I know because I used to go to a cafe regularly for a breakfast.

"Last time there was 6 people at 3 tables including my wife and I. Had to wait over half an hour to get food. Never been back, and it was really good food."

In terms of spending, study from Statista found that Brits spent £641 on takeaways per person on average in 2021. It showed a rise of 42 per cent from £452 in 2019, with spending increasing over the course of the pandemic.

In May, viewers of Channel 5's 'Deliveroo: How Do They Really Do It?' were shocked by one customer with a spend of £2500 on the takeaway service over six months.

Do you think people should be less reliant on takeaways? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section.
