Team Lagos wins gold in taekwondo, silver in shooting

Team Lagos, yesterday, clinched its first gold medal in the taekwondo event through Peju Oyebanji, competing in the women’s Kygrogi. She defeated her Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja opponent, Njideka Okafor.

Oyebanji, who won a bronze at the last festival at Abuja 2018, said the Delta 2022 sports festival is the first time she will win a gold medal, adding that she did not win a medal at the Edo 2020 edition.

Following her feat, Oyebanji said she now looks forward to being invited by the national team ahead of the 2023 All Africa Games, holding in Ghana.

Also yesterday, Lagos claimed a silver medal in the final of the 10m women’s riffle team shooting event.

The trio of Osarobo Suzi, Kalu Uzoamala and Oshodi Mojisola Oluwato with their total scores of 1496.2, clinched the silver medal in the event won by Team Delta State, which scored 1661.8.

Bayelsa took the bronze medal with the scores of 1494.2.

Lagos State Shooting Association Chief Coach, Badmos Adeleke, who was impressed with her athletes in the event, described the girls’ performance as exemplary, adding that they tried their best with the silver medal winning feat.

Adeleke commended the Lagos State Sports Commission and the chairman of the state’s shooting association for their support to the shooters, while appealing to the authority to beef up the team with modern Olympic championship guns.
