Swansea City 2-2 Portsmouth: Liam Cullen to the rescue as Swans fight back to claim point

There was once a time when goals were something of a rare commodity for those turning up to watch Swansea City.

Earlier this season, the Swans were knocking on the door of their worst ever goal drought, and their defence was among the meanest in the Championship.

Now, the last three games have yielded no less than 14 goals. In terms of entertainment, there’s clearly no issue at the moment, but this undeniably felt like two points dropped for Luke Williams and his men.

Despite a strong start, the hosts were pegged back midway through the first half courtesy of Matt Ritchie’s opener.

Swansea previously hadn’t beaten Portsmouth in a league game since Boxing Day 1960, and their hopes of changing that record took a further hit just before half-time when Josh Murphy fired in from a tight angle.

However, a Connor Ogilvie own goal moments later offered the hosts a route back into the contest, and Liam Cullen continued his red hot run of form by turning in his fourth goal of the season, shortly after Myles Peart-Harris had rattled the bar.

Cullen now has four goals and four assists in his last four games, a run that will be seen as one of several overwhelming positives for Williams.

But there will surely be some frustration that his side didn’t take all three points here, against a Portsmouth side that arrived in south Wales rock bottom of the table.

Swansea sit 12th on the back of this result, with a trip to Luton Town next up for Williams and his side.

The Swans boss admitted he was disappointed by the drop off from his side in the 2-1 win over Derby County midweek. But having raced out the traps at Pride Park, Swansea once again started on the front foot here.
