Storm Ciarán: Live updates as major incidents declared, schools closed and flights grounded

Travel restrictions have been put in place as Storm Ciarán descended on the UK mainland and Channel Islands last night. The Met Office has yellow weather warnings in place for rain for all of Wales, along with strong winds for the south and south west coast. But there is an amber warning for powerful gales for Devon and Cornwall and much of the south coast of England.

The weather agency has added that "coastal gales are likely, possibly severe in the morning, with strong northwesterly winds also developing inland." Travel restrictions have been put in place overnight. There are strong winds and restrictions on the M48 Severn Bridge in both directions between Junction 2 A466 Wye Valley Link Road (Chepstow) and Junction 1 A403 (Aust). Meanwhile, there are strong winds on the A55 Britannia Bridge between Junction 9 A487 (Treborth) and Junction 8 A5 (Llanfair P.G.) and the matrix sign has been set to 30mph.

Natural Resources Wales currently has one severe flood warning in place - for the River Ritec at Tenby - meaning there will be severe flooding with a "danger to life". There are also 13 flood alerts in place across west Wales. The Met Office has forecasted it will be an "unsettled day" in Wales on Thursday, November 2, "with outbreaks of rain, sometimes heavy". By the evening it will be a "blustery and very showery" with "rain becoming more confined to the north overnight, with some clear spells developing elsewhere, and the strong winds slowly easing too."
