Stone Cold Steve Austin: WWE Hall of Famer’s greatest moments in history

Rumours are running wild that WWE are trying to set up a WrestleMania return for Stone Cold Steve Austin in Dallas next month, almost twenty years on from his final match.

Austin 3:16

King of the Ring June 23, 1996 

The night a legacy was born and the only pay-per-view in WWE history that’s remembered solely for a closing promo. Austin was crowned King of the Ring that night and during his ‘coronation’ he uttered a line that would ignite the flame on Stone Cold’s rise to the top of the industry. Aiming his dissatisfaction at beaten Jake Roberts, who was at the time preaching passages from the bible at his rival, The Rattlesnake looked deep into the camera and said ‘Austin 3:16 just kicked your ass’. A line that would adorn t-shirts for generations and become the most famous phrase in wrestling history. 

Blood, sweat and cheers 

WrestleMania 13 March 23, 1997 

Widley regarded as one of the matches ever showcased at WrestleMania, it was a night where the fans allegiance moved from Bret Hart to their new anti-hero, hero. Austin may have lost the match, but his battle through the bout and the iconic image of his blood-soaked face refusing to tap to the Sharpshooter turned him into a bona fide babyface and Hart an unlikely heel. WWE knew that had a star in the making and a trigger was about to be fired in Austin’s move to main event stardom.

Raw September 22, 1997 

The stunner that was heard around the world in a move that kick started one of wrestling’s greatest rivalries. On the first-ever Raw to be held in Madison Square Garden, Vince McMahon told Steve Austin he wasn’t physically cleared to compete
