Stone Cold Steve Austin: Role at WrestleMania remains unclear for WWE Hall of Famer

There is a doubt over Stone Cold Steve Austin’s current role at WrestleMania 38 next month.

Various reports over the past few weeks have suggested that Austin was set for his first WWE match for nearly twenty years at WrestleMania this year. With the plan being a one-on-one clash with Kevin Owens.

However, according to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, Austin so far still hasn’t signed on for the match and currently only a ‘confrontation’ is on the books for the event.

“They will have a confrontation, but it is not clear if that will be a match or not anymore. It’s essentially up to Austin at this point. They want the match, they thought they had the match and Steve … there’s a reason he hasn’t wrestled in 19 years. I just know that as of Friday, he had not agreed to do the match even though it was on the books. Now, it’s on the books as a confrontation.”

In recent weeks we’ve seen Kevin Owen’s take repeated shots at Texas, Austin’s home state and the host for this year’s WrestleMania. The angle was supposed to lead to match between Owen’s and Austin, but it seems plans may have now changed, and we may only see a confrontation between the pair in Dallas.

The news comes just days after it emerged that Vince McMahon is now also unlikely to be involved in a WrestleMania match, as previously expected. His appearance on The Pat McAfee show set the wheels in motion for McAfee’s match with Austin Theory, seemingly putting all plans for a McMahon return to bed.

In addition to no match for Austin nor McMahon, there is still contrasting reports on the status of Cody Rhodes’ return to WWE. Rhodes was another name set for a WrestleMania slot, but the plan for Cody’s next move remains unclear.
