Stirling Albion boss left beaming after stunning St Johnstone win sets up home clash with Aberdeen

Darren Young was left beaming with pride after his side produced a superb display to stun Premiership St Johnstone 4-0 at McDiarmid Park and set up a Viaplay Cup last 16 clash with Aberdeen.

The Binos were in fine form as they shocked their top-flight hosts with two first-half goals from Greig Spence and Lewis Milne, before sending the strong away contingent into delirium with two further goals from skipper Paul McLean.

It put Stirling on ten points in Group A, allowing them to comfortably qualify as one of the competition’s best second placed sides behind group winners Ayr United.

The draw then paired Stirling with the Dons for the second time in two years, with the Binos hoping to perform better than their comfortable 5-0 defeat at Forthbank last time out.

Young praised his squad’s performance on the afternoon – but was quick to turn attention to the league opener against Edinburgh City this weekend.

The Binos boss said: “We were outstanding and what a performance from start to finish. We had to ride the storm the first ten minutes but even then we had a few wee chances. We asked the players to get wide and cross into the box and we did that and Spenny [Spence] scores, doing what he does to get on the end of it.

“We had to soak up pressure before the second goal but we got the break, Dale has a good wee bit of play through to Lewis Milne and a good finish, he’s been threatening that all pre-season.

“It was a great start to the second half because we had to contend with Dale Hilson coming off with a hamstring.

“We’re hoping that Dale and Jojo [Jordan McGregor] won’t be too bad, but the boys came in and did their job and go and score another two goals in the second half.
