Stirling Albion boss Alan Maybury says young side will learn from Premier Sports Cup shootout win

Alan Maybury admits his young Binos squad learned a key lesson on Tuesday after going from easy street to being pegged back to an extra point shootout by Stranraer.

Stirling were in control of the Premier Sports Cup Group H game heading into the final ten minutes following first goals for the club for Cammy McKinley and Ally Roy.

But a quickfire double from Blues subs Ryan Edgar and Deryn Lang dragged Albion into their second straight shootout to pick up the two points.

Just as at Hamilton a week before, it was Derek Gaston who proved the hero once again – making a pair of saves while the Binos enjoyed a clean copybook from 12 yards to prevail 4-2 in the shootout to snatch the bonus point.

After the match, Maybury said: “I thought we were good first half and scored a really good goal, looked quite comfortable but second half, we never really got going.

“They changed their shape and we didn’t really cope even though it was a match up and we struggled for large parts of the second half.

“We should feel more comfortable after the second goal and I felt as if we maybe went into protection mode a little bit too early. I’ve said to the players they need to embrace that feeling and be happy in that situation.

“We didn’t manage the game very well and that’s because it’s a new team and some of the players are also very young, so they need to go through this to know what it is about.

“We concede two quick, preventable goals and then we had a short spell where we do what we’re meant to do with some really good moves and creating chances.

“That’s where we need to be better in getting on the ball and sticking to what we do whatever the situation.”
