'My dog is named after Scotland football star – I get weird looks when walking him'

A woman has shared her exasperation over her dog's name, confessing she's fed up with having to justify it during walks.

BBC sport presenter Betty Glover took to TikTok to vent about the situation, revealing that her boyfriend named their canine companion after his favourite footballer - which often results in bemused reactions.

"I am so done with my dog's name, I can't deal with it anymore," she expressed. "People in the park are like, 'What's your dog's name?' And I'm like, 'McGinn.'"

Betty's partner is a Hibernian fan, where John McGinn played from 2015 to 2018 before he moved to Aston Villa. McGinn has since become the captain at Villa and is a favourite among fans of Scotland's national team.

Mimicking the conversations she endures, Betty recounted: "McGinn. Scottish. It's after a footballer. I didn't name him that, my boyfriend did, who's a Hibs fan."

She continued: "I can't deal with the looks anymore. Everyone's like, 'Sorry, what? ' And then you get the odd person that's like, 'Oh, that's cool,' but I don't know if they're lying."

Betty joked that she might start telling people her dog's name is "Brian" to avoid confusion. She was also keen to make sure people know she has nothing against McGinn, adding: "I just want to clarify that I actually do quite like the name, and this is nothing against John McGinn as a footballer because I absolutely love him. Neither of us are Villa fans though, so it's a bit weird, but I just can't take the justification - I have to justify it every time someone asks what his name is!"
