Stewartry RFC make it five wins out of five with victory over Cumnock

Stewartry made it five out of five as they eased past potential contenders Cumnock in a cracking match at a blustery Greenlaw.

The crossfield wind essentially nullified any advantage as Stewartry won a second minute penalty to launch an attack that saw Moffat break through only to lose possession in the corner.

Both teams were playing an open running game and Forsyth’s 30 metre break brought in Lindsay and Spence who saw Moffat in for an eleventh minute touchdown to give the Blacks a 5-0 lead.

Carson caught the high wind blown re-start and sent Forsyth on another break with Lochie Spence that ended with Robert Austin bundled into touch a metre out.

Maxwell and Armstrong won possession from the lineout and Austin scored at the posts. John Picken converted to make it 12-0 after 24 minutes.

Cumnock fought back in the second quarter when they spent some time in the Stewartry 22 but were unable to put points on the board.

The fightback continued after the break and it took Stewartry ten minutes to get some meaningful ball retention.

Chris Root stole possession from Cumnock and won a penalty in front of the posts. John Picken landed the three points to make it 15-0.

The game opened up with both teams playing exciting attacking rugby. Lindsay and Forsyth made good breaks before a penalty to Cumnock eased the pressure.

On the hour an attack involving Ben Spence, Forsyth, McCulloch, Maxwell, Nicholson and Lochie Spence was stopped just short of the Cumnock line. A minute later, from the scrum five, Lindsay and Picken put Robert Austin in for try number three, 20-0.

With twelve minutes to go Cumnock finally got a reward for their good play with a try at the posts from a move started at halfway that saw a number of tackles broken.
