Steven Gerrard 'lined up' by Leicester as ex Rangers boss set for Brendan Rodgers replacement chance

They used to be rivals on either side of the Glasgow divide.

But now Steven Gerrard could find himself filling Brendan Rodgers’ shoes at Leicester. The Foxes are on the hunt for a new boss following their relegation from the English Premier League. Former Celtic boss Rodgers left the East Midlands club by mutual consent in April as the board took measures to try and avoid the drop.

Dean Smith, who Gerrard replaced at Aston Villa, was appointed until the end of the season but couldn’t keep them up. Now the former Rangers boss could be hot on Smith’s heels for a second time, with the Sun reporting that the Liverpool legend is in with a “good chance” of taking over at the King Power Stadium. Gerrard has been out of work since October 2022 when Villa pulled the trigger on him less than a year into the gig as they slid down the table.

Gerrard’s people are understood to have a close relationship with Leicester and his name is now on a list of candidates to try and lead them out of the Championship. The presence of Gary McAllister as Gerrard’s No 2 is thought to appeal to Leicester, given the Scot’s standing at the club having moved there from Motherwell as a young player in the 1980s and spent five years at Filbert Street.

They attempted to land Graham Potter after his dismissal from Chelsea earlier this year, but he opted to take a break from the game. He has been sounded once more, but movement at Celtic could see them face competition.

Ange Postecoglou is expected to be approached and officially accept an offer from Tottenham to become their new boss. And Potter will likely be one of the names on the Celtic shortlist to replace the Aussie.
