Steven Gerrard faces 'lower' Rangers salary poser as former Aston Villa boss floated on 3 man England role shortlist

Steven Gerrard is the subject of talk around becoming the new boss of England U21s - but the pay earned at Rangers and Aston Villa would be one possible hurdle.

The current Three Lions youth boss Lee Carsley is going to consider his future this summer according to The Telegraph, and three English coaches have been suggested as potential replacements with a view to Gareth Southgate's senior shoes perhaps providing a progression path. Frank Lampard and Scott Parker have been suggested alongside former midfielder Gerrard, who has recently been linked with going to Turkey and Trabzonspor.

The English FA are 'needing to think about a succession plan for England manager Gareth Southgate' and 'the prospect of hiring Lampard or Gerrard in the event of Carsley leaving could be appealing.' A stumbling block would be his wage though after success at Rangers was followed up by being sacked from post at Aston Villa after less than a year.

Gerrard 'would also have to accept a salary far lower than the ones paid by their previous clubs.' It is not yet known whether or not it is something the manager who delivered Premiership title 55 to Ibrox would be interested in the post or not.
