Graeme Souness wants Rangers truth about Frank Lampard known as icon adamant gap to Celtic is overblown

Graeme Souness has set the record straight on his reasons for wanting Frank Lampard to become Rangers manager as he claimed there “isn't a big difference” between his old club and rivals Celtic.

The Ibrox icon was included by the Light Blues board in the interview process for Michael Beale’s successor and told after the appointment of Philippe Clement how he felt Lampard edged it. But Souness has piled praise on Belgian Clement, insisting he would want to play for the 49-year-old former Genk and Monaco gaffer – as he again offered his services to help him topple the Hoops.

Souness revealed the latest when asked by talkSPORT lunchtime show host Jim White about a return to his old club after the 70-year-old said in October that he was close and he was just tying up some loose ends. Talk has gone quiet since then and when White asked for an update, Souness said: “They’ve got their hands full with the new manager getting settled in and a new director of football. They’ve had bigger fish to fry than me but I’m talking to them and I’m at their service. I’m a Rangers fan and there to help in any way they think I can.

"For me that would be being on the end of a phone and going up to watch games and if the manager wanted me to offer an opinion – and I wouldn’t without him asking me – then I’d be there for him as well. I’m not waiting for the phone to ring but I’m waiting to hear from them. I’ve got other things.”

Fellow panelist Simon Jordan then said: “It depends what you’re trying to do there and what you think Graeme’s role would be. Graeme was advocating Frank Lampard for the job and they went a different direction.” But Souness bristled at that and said: “The isn’t entirely true. I didn’t say I was advocating for him. It
