Stephen Robinson a major Hibs next boss contender as board consider triggering St Mirren release clause

Stephen Robinson is a major contender for the vacant Hibs job.

The highly-rated St Mirren boss is under serious consideration from the Easter Road board. The capital club also know that if they want to do a deal then they will have to trigger his £250,000 release clause. Hibs have already started reaching out to candidates and Robinson’s name has been discussed at length, as they begin their selection process. Robinson, who recently signed a new deal, has worked wonders in his short time in Paisley.

The Northern Irishman led them to their first top six split finish in their history last season, just missing out on Europe. They have made an unbeaten start to the Premiership campaign and he has had that success on a relatively shoestring budget, compared to the money that has been spent recently by Hibs. Robinson has a proven record in the Scottish top-flight, previously leading Motherwell to cup finals and into Europe.

A-League-winning coach Nick Montgomery is another candidate and he has rocketed to out-right favourites with the bookmakers. It would take compensation for Hibs to buy him out of his Central Coast Mariners’ contract.

Former boss Neil Lennon has also said he would be interested in talking to Hibs over a possible return. Hibs have been inundated with applications since they fired Lee Johnson at the weekend. First-team coach David Gray and goalkeeping coach Stuart Garden will take the team for the Europa Conference League second leg clash with Aston Villa.
