Stephen O'Donnell leans on impressive Rangers away record as Motherwell ace prepares to face 'quick' Rabbi Matondo

Stephen O'Donnell knows he’ll have to be on his toes to stop rapid Rabbi Matondo if he wants to add to his impressive Ibrox record tomorrow.

But the Motherwell defender has spent a career finding ways to nullify speed demons - including the Rangers winger’s former Manchester City mate Raheem Sterling for Scotland at Wembley at Euro 2020. Matondo is enjoying a new lease of life this season and notched his second goal of the campaign against St Johnstone last weekend. But O’Donnell is at the top of his game too with high flying Well. And heading to face Rangers in their own back yard holds no fear for the former Scotland full-back who’s avoided defeat on six of his 10 visits to Ibrox.

Asked how he’ll deal with Matondo the 31-year-old said: “I just hope that Paul McGinn or one of the other centre-backs is covering me! Look, with someone who’s quick – and wingers tend to be – then, depending on how the game goes, you can make adjustments.

“If we play deep then there won’t be much space for him to get in behind us but, if we’re aggressively offensive, that opens up a different path for him.

“The manager will brief us on how he expects the game to pan out and that’s how we’ll deal with it If he wants us to show him the line and he gets crosses in because he’s so quick then we’ll have to find other ways to try and stop him – it all depends on what our game plan is and we haven’t discussed that yet but we’ll definitely have one.

“Who’s the quickest I’ve faced? Marcus Rashford, Raheem Sterling .. James Forrest is really sharp over five yards. Daizen Maeda is quick, Jota sharp. I don’t quite think Borna Barisic will be worrying about my pace on the front foot! But hopefully I’ll bring other qualities.
