World number 104 Martin O'Donnell upsets defending champion Mark Selby at English Open
Defending champion Mark Selby was dumped out of the English Open by world number 104 Martin O'Donnell in Brentwood.
Selby, who lost out in the British Open final on Sunday, missed a simple blue that could have forced a decider and conceded a 4-2 defeat.
It was a superb win for the 37-year-old O'Donnell, who won the first two frames of the match and extended his lead to 3-1 with a break of 120.
World champion Luca Brecel narrowly missed out on making a maximum break in the first frame of his 4-1 second-round win over Andy Hicks.
Brecel polished off the 15 reds and blacks but went in-off playing the final yellow with the 147 seemingly at his mercy.
Judd Trump hit a break of 140 in the third frame of his 4-1 win over Scott Donaldson, while Hossein Vafaei held his nerve with a break of 76 in the decider to see off Belgium's Julien Leclercq.
Northern Ireland's Mark Allen swept aside Wu Yize 4-1, while other winners included John Higgins and Ding Junhui.
On Wednesday, Ireland's Fergal O'Brien will take on China's Si Jiahui in his opening round game.
